The Games are Open (Köebberling & Kaltwasser)

This summer, I took part in an installation art project,
The Games are Open by two German artist,
Köebberling & Kaltwasser.

Using recycled materials from the 2010 Olympic's Athletes Village,
the artists are constructing a larger than life bulldozer that will
eventually decompose to provide fodder for new growth. From the
very beginning of construction, Emily Carr students from sculpture,
photography and industrial design have assisted in the process.
The students have been instrumental in realising this
artwork that occupies land on the edge of the Olympic Village.
Some of these tudents have simply volunteered, while others joined
up as part of the Co-op Program. Recently, the team has been
oined by UBC Architecture student volunteers
to create a great mix of expertise and interests on site.

Newly Born (scrubbing pads)

This artwork, Newly Born, is my latest interpretation of the natural beauty of a tree in the park. By piling multiple layers of colourful scrubbing pads which we use on a daily basis, I want to visually articulate the fact that we don’t value and appreciate the ubiquitous trees in our lives. The bright leaf buds and flowers growing on the tree trunk express my hope for a greener and sustainable future.

3D Gallery - Thinking about Green, group show

The artists in the 3D Gallery responded to the Port Moody Arts Centre’s call for submission
to a thematic show whose subject is the colour green and it was up to the artists how they interpreted it. The Arts Centre was looking for interesting, innovative, creative and insightful works that investigate the colour green.

The selected artists show a wide range of different interpretations. Painter, Alexis J. Beringer is interested in colour as independent means of expressing significant form. Painter, Melanie Cossey is fascinated with 19th century green majolica with its molded surfaces and colourful glazes which she contrasts on her paintings with brightly coloured vegetables. Richard Motchman, also a painter, looks at the surface of water, the infinite shades of green of the Okanagan Lake which he represents in a three dimensional painting manipulated by the viewer. For jewelry designer, Amanda Maxwell green equals growth. Her ‘floatsam’ pieces, wire and fibre jewelry, are inspired by her parents’ garden and the deep darkness of temperate rainforests. Ron Simpson, a former architect, is interested in the studies of buildings and landscape and his five colour linocut print is a study of a nearby house enshrouded in a halo of foliage and overgrown grass.

Sanghyuan Samuel Kim and Ian Freemantle both use found objects and household materials in creating their sculptural objects but Kim’s work is inspired by a literal object, a tree in the park, while Freemantle gets his inspiration from the material itself which he transforms into new objects.

Artist, Christopher Rodrigues creates his photographic work that resembles collage and painting by “borrowing” pixels of colour from images found on the internet. He entirely excludes the camera from the artistic process. He approaches his work as a “regenerative” project in that “it will change in a manner similar to how the Earth is diversifying in the face of global warming and other cataclysmic events.”

I revised the project inspired by Tara Donovan's work, bringing the previous one into another level of complexity and sophistication of idea. I added a new element of flexibility to give the sculppture an active quality.

Rather than gluing each cup with hot glue, I joined each styrofoam cup with fishing line to make it flesible. Sewing the cups with fishing line was an excellent choice since it is transparent for the viewers and the process was less time consuming that using hot glue. Eventually, I ended up making a piece the size of a single bed of styrofoam cups which reminded me of a security blanket that I had used in my childhood.

This extremely flexible sulpture is easily adaptable to any kind of environment; I can either cover myself with the blanket or put it on any surface of furtniture or even rocks. I basically produced a sculpture that has a dynamic relationship with both the audience and myself. I believe this piece of art provokes a strong desire to wear it and offers the audience the exceptional visual excitement of observinc the organic pattern of the white cups.

Lego in Robson

LEGO is such an integral part of our lives even till today. It’s the toy that many people perceives timeless and worth keeping. Lego is our ultimate childhood memory. Lego is our basic toy that satisfied our young and playful creative and innovative imagination. It is not easy to deny it, but we never really grew out of Lego.
In this collaborative project with Minji Kim, called “Lego in Robson”, we were inspired by Lego blocks and created two blocks of Lego in red and yellow. Since Lego has clean surfaces and lines, building Lego was one of the biggest challenges that we had faced while assembling the facsimile Lego. We used two large cardboard boxes as basic structure and added round cylinders on the top of each one; this was the lightest and most effective way to build the sculptures. To make the rough surface of the cardboard boxes smoother and neater, we glued thick bristle boards on each side of the blocks. And then, we evenly sprayed colourful and glossy enamel paints (red and yellow) to mimic the real quality of plastic.
After we completed making the two large blocks of Lego, we pulled the blocks with a yellow rope around them along on Robson St. and Granville St. By carrying Lego while wearing semi-formal suits in the heart of the city, Minji and I could visually articulate the fact that we as students still maintain childish and playful aspects in our unconscious. Also, the walking with Lego blocks along fancy streets is a visual representation that even adults still carry a childish and playful side within them.
At the beginning, we were very self-conscious about carrying big brightly painted Lego blocks down the streets and could not walk comfortably. However, the encouraging and cheerful comments from people really inspired us to be more comfortable and confident in front of crowds. Unfortunately, a few people expressed some negative comments about us which were a bit hurtful, since we did not expect to hear criticism from people. As time passed by, we gradually did not mind about getting stared at and people taking pictures of us. We documented this act of pulling Lego through downtown by getting help from our friend to take pictures. We specifically asked him to consider the Golden Rectangle while taking shots of us, giving a clearer emphasis on our Lego. Again, we want to transmit the main message that although people have grown and appear as adults, our minds are still young and fresh.
This is our first attempt to produce a piece of performance art in streets and it seemed a little terrifying to give it a try. Since collaboration is about respecting and acknowledging each other’s ideas, we had to consequently make some compromises and adjust ideas to make us satisfied with the result of the project. In the end, we learned a valuable lesson that every idea that seems to be overwhelming for one person to do can be seamlessly developed and effectively produced when working as collaboration.

Attracted by Donovan’s unusual artistic style of accumulation, I incorporated common everyday object to create an incredibly organic sculpture that is suggestive in a shape of a single cell organism.
I basically wrapped my body with small white plastic cups to create a visual representation of a single cell organism such as an amoeba. Also, it has a dynamic relationship with myself since it is wearable and provides me a small resting place from a fast-paced world. The white cups around my body suggest my purity and sense of innocence and seem to embrace me and protect my body. By one wearing this sculptural piece, it covers up one’s ethnicity and identity, breaking down the racial barrier that exists among people.
This whole project required an extensive amount of energy and was a very time consuming project. Not only did I have to pay great attention to assembling each cup, I consistently did try on the sculpture to get a general fit of the sculpture onto my body, while also considering the aesthetic appeal of this organic structure. Since each cup has a thick round edge and a depth, the repetitive use of cups created a strong visual pattern and volume that are reminiscent of a beehive, allowing me to learn the power of accumulation using same materials. Ultimately, this project has allowed me to appreciate the prominent artist’s work and view it as a stepping stone to find my own artistic style and interest in contemporary art.

It was selected for One 4 One, a group juried exhibition organized by Maple Ridge Gallery. The subtext of the title One 4 One intends to convery that there is "one piece of art for everyone." This exhibit is being held from October 25 to December 6, 2008.

Melting Monument

While I was waiting the candles for my first candle wax artwork, Celebration of Maturity, to melt down, I created another artwork called Melting Monument which is an abstract form of monument for melting icebergs. I created an iceberg structure with chicken wire and then placed approximately 15 white candle sticks in the small gaps between the wires. As the candles in the structure melt down, they created a huge island of candle wax as if to symbolize the melting ice due to global warming. With this particular artwork, I could capture the current stage of life of an iceberg at the North Pole. The candle residue also created some interesting and intriguing patterns on chicken wire. Also, I hope the hollowness of its structure cautions the viewers that we as the members of society need to protect our nature and preserve it well so that our future generation can enjoy its beauty.
Also, I realized about the importance and preciousness of preserving nature. I learned a valuable message that once we have destroyed it, we can not bring it back.

Celebration of Maturity

I have created two pieces of artwork that represent the life cycle of human and nature, incorporating candle wax as a medium, which also has a strong message of time passing in itself. As the candles melt they create icicles of wax, constantly shifting and totally changing in shape. Seeing an art work by Barbara Nasto, I immediately found myself emotionally moved by the three dimensional texture and the organic patterns from liquid candle wax residue. The first piece of wax sculpture, called Celebration of Maturity is my own interpretation of a big birthday cake for celebrating 18 years of life using 18 candles. Each candle symbolizes each year that I have lived on earth. I have selected two clear plastic containers and a glass jar as a base for the melting candles. Moreover, the colours of the candles, mostly warm colours, represent my burning passion for art throughout my 18th years of life so far.
When creating this, my biggest challenge was to control the amount of wax on a specific desirable place for aesthetic reasons. To solve this problem, I used a lighter to have control of the wax residue falling on my work. The use of the lighter effectively sped up the progress of the melting candles. Waiting the candles to completely melt down required my patience and I felt as if I was testing my endurance. This project offered me quite time of meditation to look back at my 18 years of life and what I have been through to finally become an adult.

Further to my previous artwork “Waste 2 Go” visualizing my favorite drink, Milk 2 Go, the inspiration for this artwork came from a trash can from which I collected empty bottles, cans, and cups for recycling. While I usually discard these items, I want to reinterpret their value and meaning. Creating and gathering my own bottles and cans was my artistic version of the mass production and consumption around us. The disposable objects people habitually dump can be recreated as beautiful and visually pleasing structural objects. To create contemporary visual effects, I used wire mesh. The shiny metallic reflection and flashy appearance as well as see-through effect also imply our current futuristic design trend.

Going Back to Nature (repeating multiples 0809)

This particular artwork, called “Going back to Nature” represents a log. Since I was given a limitation of materials I could use for this project of “Repetition Multiples”. I had to push myself to find the characteristics and limits of paper. In the thinking process, I focused on the origin of the abundance of office papers that we use on a daily basis for printing and work purposes. These papers are from trees in a forest and I was trying to bring fragile and flat sheets of paper back into its natural form. To make this office paper stayed, solid and firm, I started to roll sheets of papers diagonally. This method was the far most efficient and fastest way to make paper solid and rigid.
Just a few months ago, I had a chance to meet a Canadian artist, Michelle Allard, in a Buschlen Mowatt scholarship program at Arts Umbrella. Similar to this project of “Working with Many”, Michelle had numerous rolled florescent paper piled to create an illusion of hills. This gave me the source of inspiration for this project that simple objects like rolled paper can hold a very powerful aesthetic value. Her work was mostly a labour based artwork, requiring many volunteers to roll papers.
The log that I have made with hundreds of rolled papers contains age rings to recreate the essence of a cross-section of cut logs. Also, rolling hundreds of sheets by myself was a such a overwhelming experience that it took me over 10 hours to complete the project. Although numerous hours has been put into this piece of artwork in the midst of a tight schedule, I have no regrets about spending so much time on it. For the next project, “Evolving Duration Project”, I would like to create an art piece that can be made within several hours.

This is a drawing and painting of a rural landscape. I accentuate the texture of the rock and braches and the contrast between glowing water and the rock. I derived pure enjoyment from creating this work because this was my chance to explore different materilas including charcoal, pastel, and oil paints and experiment with various textures to express the serenity and purity of nature.

I painted in acrylic my own created object with maters that can be easily found in the urban setting, such as steel, rubber, grass, soil. This unique object was place on a parking lot with a typical apartment building in the background.

In this experimental study of blurry image, I focus on the new birth of tiny fresh leaves on the ground. I wanted to capture the peaceful and meaningful moments and celebrate the birth of new life on earth.

This painting in oil and acrylic is my interpretation fo materialism in mordern society. Unfortunately most people tend to focus on the wealth and their possession. These subjects take a very huge role in defining their happiness and their sense of achievement. Through this piece of art, I convey the message that such a life in pursuit of big fortune is fruitless and vain. The blue uniformed mine workers are blinded by the flashy appearance of fake jewels. I reinterpret the futuristic structure as modern mining for instant fortune. Imagine 4 people try to mine red ruby in spite of high risk and danger and climb for big money, but it turns out to be useless. Through the choise complementary colors, pop-out effect is emphasized.

In My Memory 2007 mixed media

Futuristic 2007 mixed media sculpture

My intention was to create several groupd of 3D objects which look like 2-dimensional painting. For futuristic image, three 3D cubes were made with bamboo stick. Dried branches in 3 bright flourescent colors give glowing effect. 3 oval-shaped silver rings with abract image represents the space, while curved yellow line reminds me of yellow line on a curved road. I love the combination of white, metallic, bright fluorescent colors in dark background. By arranging cube, oval, square objects to look edgy, organic, and dynamic. I experience an amazing travel to the unknown space in my imagination.

Who Killed the Electric Cars? 2007 Gal kid medium on the print

I developed this work from one of the current controversal social issues in automobile industry, which I have a deep interest in. The short documentary film titled "Who killed the electric cars?" inspired me to start this project. In 1996 GM introduced an elctric car called EV1 and started to lease them to the public. However, this car project didn't seem to benefit their business partner, Shell, becasue it didn't consume any fuel. In 2003 GM suddenly announced that the lease of EV1 would discontinue. Instead, GM started to put huge investment on the development of hydrogen cars in partnership with Shell for better profit. It was a result of conflict between Eco-friendly vs. Economy. The leasers of EV1 expressed their anger and grief by publickly performing the funeral of EV1.

As a future car designer, I felt sympathetic wtih developers and users of EV1 about the death of the EV1. In memory of the discontinued model, I would like to created something special In this artwork, I applied several layers of Gal kid on the picture which displayed the piles of crushed EV1's, expressing depression, frustration and sadness. I want to convey the message that EV1 remain only in memory. Who made the Electric Cars? Who killed the Electric Cars? That's the irony.

Into the Depth, oil, acrylic and cold wax on paper

Into the Depth is an oil painting of modern architecture. I was really attracted by the calm atmosphere of the modern inner sanctum of the indoor pool. Also, the image gave me a primordial urge to dive into the aquamarine depths of the water and enjoy moments of relaxation, escaping from the burden of daily routines. The use of cold wax allowed me to express the translucent qualities of pristine water to recreate my own tranquil space.

Sanghyun Samuel Kim – Surrey Art Gallery: Arts 2008 Exhibition

First year student Sanghyun Samuel Kim was awarded first place in the category Painting on Paper for his work Into the Depth (oil, acrylic, and wax) in the annual juried Arts 2008 Exhibition, organized by the Arts Council of Surrey, in collaboration with the Surrey Art Gallery.

In addition to painting, over the past couple of years, Samuel has been exploring sculpture using found materials to comment on the destructive nature of consumerism. The exhibition features work by both local and regional artists and runs through to September 21, 2008.

‘ARTS 2008’공모전 1위한 김상현군

9월 에밀리카(Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design)로 진학할 예정인 한인 학생 김상현군이 써리 아트갤러리(Surrey Art Gallery)가 주관하는 ‘ARTS 2008’ 공모전에서 회화부문 1위를 차지했다.
‘ARTS 2008’ 공모전은 1974년부터 평균연령 35세 이상 60세까지 캐나다 전역에서 활동 중인미술가들이 참가하는 대회로, 올해 24년의 역사와 높은 수준의 권위를 자랑한다. 올해 만17세가 된 김군은 이번 공모전 최연소 참가자로 기성 작가들의 작품과 나란히 겨뤄 최고의 상을 받게 되어 그 의미가 더욱 크다.
김군은 “학생들끼리 경쟁하는 대회가 아닌 오랜 시간 미술을 전공했거나 화가로 활동하고 있는 성인 작가들의 쟁쟁한 작품 속에서 1위에 입상할 줄은 전혀 예상하지 못했다”며 시상식에서 캐네디언 성인 화가들 가운데 최고상을 받을 때는 “가슴이 뭉클했다”고 수상소감을 밝혔다.

■ 오일과 콜드왁스 이용해 3개월 걸려
김상현군의 수상 작품은 ‘into the depth’. 오일과 아크릴, 콜드왁스를 사용해 수영장 내부를 그린 최근 작품으로, 잔잔한 수면의 파장을 편안한 안식처를 갖고 싶어하는 모든 사람들의 마음과 연결시켰다. 상현군은 학교 수업이 없는 주말을 이용해 틈틈이 그린 이번 수상작품을 그리는 과정에서 콜드 그린을 녹여 오일과 섞어 그려야 하는 작업이 까다롭고 물 성분인 왁스가 마르지 않아 촛불을 켜서 말리는 등 굳히는 과정에서 약간의 어려움을 겪기도 했다. 또한 수영장 내부의 깊이와 빛의 각도에 따라 색깔과 파장이 다양해 겹겹이 표현하기가 쉽지 않아 시작한 지 3개월에 걸쳐 완성시켰다.
최연소 참가자로 최고의 상을 받게 된 상현군이 1위 수상자로 확정된 후 작가의 작품해설을 경청하던 심사위원들은, 수면의 잔잔한 파장과 투명함을 차분하고 섬세하게 잘 표현해낸 그의 작품을 두고 “진짜 네가 그린 그림인가” 반문하며 콜드왁스 표현기법에 큰 관심을 보였다. 그들은 또 “너를 1등으로 뽑는데 어려움이 없었다”는 말로 작품의 완성도에 극찬을 아끼지 않았다.

■ 2005년부터 크고 작은 미술대회 석권
김군은 2008년 대회에서 1위에 입상하기 이전, 2006년과 2007년 대회에서도 연속 입선한 것을 비롯해 그 동안 많은 대회에서 상을 받았다. 그림을 시작한 지 얼마 되지 않아 출품했던 2006년 대회에서 4대1의 경쟁을 뚫고 입선한 후 자신감을 얻어 1위를 꿈꾸게 됐다는 상현군은, 이후 2007년 ‘Prince of Wales Department Award’, 2007년, 2008년 ‘Buschlen Mowatt Teen Scholarship Program’ 대회에서도 연속 입상하는 등 크고 작은 대회에서 두각을 드러내며 지난 주말 2008년 대회 수상자들과 밴쿠버 ‘Buschlen Mowatt Gallery’에서 전시회도 가졌다. 이밖에 9학년이던 2005년 쓰나미(Tsunami) 희생자들의 아픔과 작은 희망을 표현한 작품은 밴쿠버 법원(Vancouver Provincial Court) 전시실에 3년 동안 전시되기도 했다.

■ 갤러리 돌아보며 소재 찾아
어릴 때부터 자동차와 자전거 등 바퀴가 달려 있는 모든 움직이는 기구를 좋아하고 특히 미술과 디자인 방면에 소질을 보인 상현군의 장래희망은 자동차 디자이너. 그림을 그리지 않는 대부분의 시간은 자동차 잡지와 자료를 보면서 보낸다. 작품 아이디어가 떠오르지 않을 때는 밴쿠버 갤러리를 돌아보며 소재를 찾는다. 특히 작가가 직접 작품설명을 해주는 UBC 대학 내 전시공간을 자주 가는 편이다. 그곳에서 작품마다 제작과정의 어려움과 그 어려움을 이겨내는 방법 등 선배들의 ‘작가정신’을 배우고 돌아오면 새로운 아이디어가 떠오른다는 것. 미술 외 일반 학업성적도 우수한 편인 김군은 또 지난달 졸업식에서 평균92점 이상의 상위 10%학생들에게 주어지는 최우등상을 받았다. 이재연 기자

58 juried works in annual exhibition

Examples of innovation and variety are on view at ARTS 2008, the juried exhibition staged by the Arts Council of Surrey. In its 24th year, the show opened Friday (June 28) at Surrey Art Gallery and continues until September 21. The 58 works were done and submitted by artists from Surrey and around the region. The works range from traditional paintings to contemporary expressions, and "reflect innovation in thinking and use of mediums," according to judges. ARTS 2008 celebrates "the diverse artistic talents of both established and emerging visual artists, generates awareness of their work and plays an important role in their professional development."
Winners have been named in five categories, with the People's Choice Award to be announced once the exhibit closes at the gallery, located at Bear Creek Park. Pat Schendel's Catch the Wave earned first prize in the 3-D Works and Fibre Arts category. "I have been working with crystalline porcelains for 12 years," Schendel wrote in the artist's statement, "and am always excited by the random growth of crystals that are manipulated by temperature control.... I was influenced by a recent vacation to the Marquesas Islands, where I watched surfers riding the waves."
Marie Heath says she was longing for a tropical vacation when she conceived Tropical Punch (winner in the Drawing, 2-D Mixed Media & Printmaking category) on a dreary, rainy Sunday. She wrote: "Tie-dyed tissue papers, small beads and slivers of metallic papers were layered over a base of acrylic inks to produce bursting rainbows of colours."
Top mark in the Photography and New Media category went to David Crocker's For Mem-ry Has Paint-ed This, its title borrowed from the words on the sheet music pictured. "Without the artistic skill of the woman who decorated the shop window with a display that captured my photographic eye," he wrote, "this image would not exist." Sanghyun Samuel Kim's Into The Depth earned first place in the Painting on Paper category, while the Painting on Canvas nod went to Chun Hua Catherine Dong's Multicultural Consistency II.
The other new exhibit at Surrey Art Gallery is Recent Acquisitions: Persona Socialis, a collection of paintings, drawings, photographs and sculpture drawn from the gallery's "small but focused" permanent collection of 380 works. In Recent Acquisitions, works by Susan Edelstein, Toni Latour, Ken Lum and others consider the concept of persona -- "the public identities created through our choices in clothing and actions."

If it's diversity you seek, diversity you shall find at this year's juried community exhibition at the Surrey Art Gallery. In its 24th year, the ARTS 2008 show features 58 pieces chosen by jurors John Cranswick, Brian Foreman and Paulo Majano from nearly 200 submitted by local artists. There are human figures, landscapes, still lifes and abstracts. Subject matter ranges from children to birds, trees to boats, reptiles and amphibians to vegetables and fruits.

The media is also extremely varied. While there's most definitely the more traditional uses of materials, like drawings and paintings on paper and canvas, there are also pieces such as a mask made of leather, a photo-transfer on canvas and a woven raffia piece. Artists appear to be mixing things up more and more, with one, Marie Heath, using a rainbow of watercolours on paper, combined with foil pieces and beads. Her piece took top prize in the mixed media category. "We just thought it was so individual," said Foreman, "playing with colour, repetition – even the handling of the materials." Other artists have combined ink and mixed papers, fabric, wax, pastels and charcoal. Pat Schendel's stunning crystalline porcelain pieces were also a prize winners. Inspired by surfers she watched during a recent visit to the Marquesas Islands, Schendel's series of five brilliant blue wave-shaped bowls are perfectly uniform with a sparkling turquoise glaze. Other even more unique works include a tall table-top stained-glass lamp by Margaret Billings and Allanah Atley's intricately beaded walking stick topped with bone, which she explains in her artist's statement is of Aleut (Alaskan Inuit) origin, with every bead having been blessed. Stephen Welther submitted something the local show has never received – an inlaid stone piece. The landscape scene has creme, burgundy and green-toned stones comprising rolling hills, trees and a small assembly of black and white sheep. "There's a kind of naive quality to it, which is kind of cute," said Foreman. Cam MacDonald, who was included in last year's exhibition, again has a humorous canned fish piece in the show – this one called Canned Salmon (SIC) and consisting of large white-labeled cans with "Diced Barreleye" in black type.

Reach Out 2007 oil

This reflects my ordinary daily life. It represents the moment that I stretch my hand toward the alarm clock after a pleasant nap. My arm is reaching out to the alarm to turn off, because I had to wake up. However in my deep unconsciousness, I was very reluctant to reach the alarm and didn't really want to be disturbed.

Color Pencils 2007 oil

When I recently found these color pencils at the check counter of Opus, I was fascinated by the curly mixture of bright colors. This is a photo-realism painting of color pencils. Three different color pencils were placed on my glass coffee table like a canvas. I expressed the beauty of vivid colors as a whole and three different individual appearance of color pencils from different distance.

This particular artwork tells a story with a very special meaning about me. The head, made out of air-dry clay, is collaged with organized, patterned images of numerous library book stacks. As a senior high school student, I gradually spent more time in a library studying for exams. Slowly, the image of bookcases was embedded in my head becoming the source of inspiration for the surface of my head. These images represent my development of maturity and the amount of knowledge that I digested through my high school years. This peaceful and calm atmosphere of the library well relfects my personality.

This installation of optical allusion was inspired by the works of Banksy. With blue masking tape on two walls and wooden floor, I created an image of signal strength. It was necessary to find a right angle and right standing point. If I look it from a certain spot, the signal bars look as if they are straight. I chose the signal strength sign of cell phone because it is one of the most familiar icons in this era of telecommunication, and symbolizes connectivity.

Artist Statement (Waste 2 Go)

Instead of throwing away a large number of bottles daily, I was intrigued by this idea of repoducing, Milk 2 Go bottles, which is one of my favorite drink. Two sets of bottel mold case are my personal artistic response to the mass production of milk bottles. To create different visual effect on the box, I ripped the surface of a card board box leaving unexpectedly beauful aesthetic pattern. Making the milk bottles with wire mess and aluminiium foils, I wanted to emphasize that the plastic bottles people habitually dump can be recreated as beautiful and visually pleasing structual objects. Some of the bottles with missing parts represent the defects that are found during the mass production. The shiny reflection and flashy appearance of the bottles also imply our current futuristic trend of design.

Light 2006 charcoal

Using charcoal, I draw the upper interior of a shopping mall. I was fascinated by the contrast of the strikingly bright light coming from the ceiling and the thick black steel beam within the ceiling.

Symbol M, McDonald

"Symbol M" is pop art using accrylic paints. Our society seems to be mesmerized by one of the fastfood companies, McDonald. We see McDonald's ads on TV or on the bus. The reason that I chose the pop art project is because I personally think that it is a great tool to reflect our social and cultural atmosphere in which we currently live, namely what we like, what we think, what kinds of value we admire. This project led me to realize how McDonald affects and impacts our society. Being fast and convenient is one of our most important values in our ordinary lives.

This drawing is one piece of a series of pencil drawing of Extrem Power. I was very interested in various models of vacuum. When I saw this extreme power vacuum, I wanted to capture the imaginery scene in which the powerful vacuum was sucking up the light dandelion seeds.

Glowing Night Spring 2006 oil

This is a painting in oil of the late night scene of downtown Vancouver in early winter. I started by applying Gesso on the canvas to get an interesting texture which resembled raindrop One of the challenges in this project was to capture the atmosphere of a rainy and blurry image and the moment of stillness in deep darkness. My focus was on the glowing neon sign and the reflected lights on a wet road in contrast to the dark background.

I tried to capture the real image and mood of myself reflected in the mirror and at the same time the vague of shadow of me on the wall. Artist statement: This art piece in oils strongly reflect my commitment during my recent several teen years. At every dental appointment with Dr. Koh, my braces were readjusted and consequently gave me enormous pain and suffering. While this set of metal caused me to go through an uncontrollable internal struggle, it finally became my close friend and the strong supporter of my teeth and spirit. I really wanted to express, on a wooden board, my endurance and lite-time commitment toward the successful end.

Dream 2006 acrylic

This painting is a spontaneous response of my subconscious state of mind on canvas. The green scenery with dots of flowers resembles the backyard in which I played during my childhood. By putting layers of overlapped glass on the left, I created two contradicctory atmosphere in the piece itself: the fragile characteristic of glass and the image of a wild field. I love the contrast between the artificial and the natural. They also enhance the mood of mystery and unsolved mind-puzzles, which most people experience in their afterthoughts about their dreams.

On December 26, 2004, the whole world was shocked by the disaster that happened near the Indian Ocean. Then next day, the front pages of most newspapers were covered by pictures of the tsunami's casulties. One picture really touched me : a crying mother holding her dead son. I was determined to reflect the catastroophic social atmosphere with acyrlic paints. "Deadly Disaster" conveys a message. - Even though the disaster casues suffering to many people, there is still hope and peace. Especially, I was keen to associate hope with the biblical story: Noah's Ark. I placed the boat at the top using bright colors and two tragic casulities at the bottom using dark colors. Dripping acrylic method captures a tear drop effect. I also glued the newsprint title on my painting to recall the horror and immediacy of the disaster.
